Stop Philip Morris International's Use of Popular Argentinean Bands to Target Youth!

Philip Morris International’s Argentina subsidiary, Massalin Particulares, is promoting Philip Morris cigarettes to young people via a nationwide “Iron Friends” concert series during June and July 2010. The promotional campaign involves extensive advertising online and in stores; prizes attractive to young people, e.g. an autographed guitar, iPods, and meetings with the bands; and free cigarette pack distribution at concerts. Argentinean youth are calling on the participating bands, which are very popular with young people in Argentina, to show they care about their fans by going “tobacco industry-free.” Click here for more information

The GYAT had two poster presentations, one focusing on the GYAT delegation cross-border partnership between U.S. GYAT members and GYAT members in Lucknow, India. GYATers Bobby Ramakant, Nicole Sutton, Andy Berndt, and Holly Aprea contributed to this presentation.

The second poster focused on the GYAT Network overall. Anna, Andy, and Holly helped to collect photos and updates from GYATers around the world to share examples of youth advocacy and share the GYAT's mission.

And if you've never been to India, this video is a great way to get a sneak preview. This video takes place primarily in Lucknow and Agra, not Mumbai, and the three cities are all very different, but at least it will introduce you to some of the tobacco control efforts in India, and some of the GYAT members you will meet.

Look for the GYAT Network Banner at the WCTOH

GYAT members and supporters - please watch for the GYAT banner at the WCTOH. GYAT members will be carrying this banner during the 10 March 2009 walkathon to support smoke-free Mumbai, and smoke-free public places worldwide.

Delegates will walk from National Centre for the Performing Arts (the conference venue) and this walk will culminate at CCI (cricket club). Please visit http://gym09.hriday-shan.org/category/advocacy-events-gym-2009 for further details regarding these advocacy events. More information about specific times and meeting points for the walkathon should be posted soon.

We'll also post the banner at the 11 March 2009 GYAT networking session as part of the conference-wide networking event from 7:00 - 9:00 pm at the East Lawns CCI, Churchgate, Mumbai. This will be immediately following the youth march and symbolic bonfire that will be held at the same venue. Look for the GYAT banner at that event as well!

If you'll be at the WCTOH please come out and show your support for the GYAT and for global youth advocacy. GYAT members will be available to share more information about the network and how to become a member.

Wear orange to support youth advocacy!

GYATers will be wearing and handing out orange ribbons for people to wear at the World Conference on Tobacco or Health and the Global Youth Meet 2009. Please find a GYATer to get your ribbon, and to help put the ribbons together and hand them out to others at the conference.

This will be part of a larger effort to continue building support for youth advocacy as a critical part of the global tobacco control movement.

Tell YOUR youth advocacy story!

We know that the most effective long term strategy for reducing youth smoking rates at the population level is not youth education but the implementation of comprehensive tobacco control policies.

Today’s youth, the largest generation in history, are uniquely positioned to advocate for such policies. As the primary target of the global tobacco industry and as symbols of “the future,” the voices of youth carry special moral clarity.

Youth possess numerous attributes of value to the tobacco control movement:

the ability to discreetly monitor tobacco advertising, promotions, and sponsorships targeting young people;
creative and novel ideas for advocacy tactics and strategies;
the ability to mobilize large numbers of peers for activities;
flexibility of time;
familiarity with new social networking technologies; and
energy, enthusiasm, passion and unbridled idealism.

We know this, but it's time to share that story with the entire tobacco control community at the 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Mumbai, India.

GYAT members from around the world will be sharing their stories, and will be sharing the palm cards above. Here's what you can do to help:

Please find Holly at the WCTOH and GYM 2009 to pick up some blank cards.
As you attend sessions at the conferences, and hear youth and adults talking about the contributions youth advocates are making to support policy change, ask them to share their story on the back of the card.
Collect the card when they are done, and return it to Holly.

GYAT at the World Conference on Tobacco or Health

The World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH), and the Global Youth Meet 2009 (GYM 2009), are approaching quickly! Above are the GYAT palm cards that we'll be distributing at the conferences to let people know more about the GYAT Network and how to get involved.

We hope to hold an informal GYAT networking session as part of the conference-wide networking event on 11 March 2009 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm at the East Lawns CCI, Churchgate, Mumbai. This will be immediately following the youth march and symbolic bonfire that will be held at the same venue.

Please find Holly Aprea at the WCTOH or GYM 2009 to pick up copies of the GYAT palm card (pictured above) so you can help spread the word about the GYAT Network!

Youth Advocates of the Year Awards - Deadline for International Category Extended to March 13th

Each year the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids in Washington, DC honors youth advocates who have made significant efforts to reduce tobacco use. This year one of the individual awards is open to international applicants.

The Youth Advocates of the Year Awards honor top youth advocates - young people who have fought hard to promote tobacco prevention legislation in their areas - to reduce tobacco marketing to kids in their communities and to stop their peers from using tobacco.

Please find the application forms at www.tobaccofreekids.org/yaya. Youths applying for the award must be aged 15-18 and be competent in spoken English so that they can take part in interviews and a youth symposium in Washington.

Please disregard the deadline as we have decided to extend it to March 13th.

The winners will be notified in early April 2009 and will be honored at the Youth Advocates of the Year Awards Gala dinner, which will be held in Washington, DC on May 6, 2009. The youth advocates recognized at the gala will receive scholarship and grant awards.

New Zealand: Youth Campaign to Ban Tobacco Displays

Cancer Society Smokefree Youth Ambassadors in New Zealand are involved in the campaign to ban tobacco displays. They have helped to raise the profile of this issue in the media and their community. Check out this article about Sarah, a Cancer Society Smokefree Youth Ambassador in the Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. She conducted a survey of young people's views on the campaign to ban tobacco displays and has been interviewed by her local papers and a national youth magazine about the survey. She will also be giving it to her local MP. And here is a story on a group of school students who have got involved in the campaign by signing a banner which they'll give to their local MP.

Apply for the WCTOH Youth Pre-Conference Today!
Applications due August 30, 2008

HRIDAY-SHAN, a GYAT partner, will be hosting a two day pre-conference leading up to the WCTOH. The pre-conference will be in New Delhi, India on March 6-7, 2009. It will be a great opportunity to reconnect with GYAT members and meet new youth and young adult advocates fighting the tobacco industry around the world.

You can find all the application materials and more information about the pre-conference at the WCTOH website. This information is also posted on HRIDAY-SHAN's website.

A limited number of scholarships will be available to support participation in the pre-conference, but they will only be awarded to applicants from developing countries. Youth and young adults from developed countries are encouraged to apply to attend, but will have to secure their own funding for participation.

Youth and young adult applicants must be age 16 - 25, and adult chaperons are also encouraged to apply to accompany youth under age 18. Adult chaperons should also be working in the tobacco prevention field.

Campaign to Stop Tobacco Sponsorship of George Benson Concert in Indonesia

In November 2006, an Indonesian GYAT member found out that an American jazz singer’s upcoming concert in Jakarta was being sponsored by a tobacco company. Quick cross-border research between U.S. and Indonesian GYAT members generated sufficient information to launch an online email campaign targeting Benson’s U.S.-based agent in a last minute effort to halt the tobacco company’s sponsorship of the concert. The campaign had an immediate impact, and the agent reported that the tobacco signage inside the concert was removed. Click here for more information

British American Tobacco Annual Meeting

GYAT members from the U.S. and Nigeria collaborated with Action on Smoking or Health (London) and members of the England-based groups D-Myst and ATYC to organize multiple youth advocacy events around the meeting, including an advocacy training and a rally outside the meeting itself. also provided valuable information for ASH’s report “You’ve got to be kidding” which details how the company is targeting worldwide and was released on the day of the meeting. In response to the report and irrefutable evidence that BAT promotes single sales of cigarettes in Nigerian that one of the Nigerian youth advocates presented to a BAT executive, the company has acknowledged violating its own marketing code of conduct. ASH has also been inspired to seek funding to establish a youth advocacy program in

Altria Shareholders Meeting

Over 100 youth advocates from 13 different U.S. states and Indonesia, including numerous GYAT members, organized advocacy events around the Altria meeting, including a one-day training, a rally outside of the meeting, statements inside the meeting, and a rally outside the company’s headquarters in New York City. They exposed how the company continues to target youth in the

U.S.

and around the world and echoed a global call to “quarantine” the company to prevent it from further poisoning another generation. International Week of Action for Smokefree Movies

GYAT members in India, Romania, the U.S. and elsewhere participated in the annual International Week of Action for Smokefree Movies to push Hollywood to implement four policy measures advocated by the Smokefree Movies Action Network and endorsed by the World Health Organization, and to encourage other countries to implement these policy measures, as appropriate. GYM 2006 Agra, India
A delegation of GYAT Participants traveled to India Nov. 7th to Nov. 20 to help lead a training in Lucknow, India with our fellow GYAT'er Bobby Ramakant, and also to participate in the Global Youth Meet in Agra, India. The trip was incredible, it was amazing to work other GYAT'ers in their home countries, and to learn about how other countries are dealing with tobacco control. We are putting together a video of whole trip, and are putting up a bunch of the pictures on the GYAT Flickr page.

More info to come, but wanted to say the trip was a blast, and it's another great example of GYAT collaboration.

The GYAT DVD is out! We just printed 150 of them, and will be sending them out to every GYAT participant, it has all the videos from the GYAT, all the pictures we collected and took, and also all the powerpoints and planning documents from the GYAT. It's so much GYAT, it'll be like going to the GYAT all over again.

To access the pictures and planning documents just insert the DVD in your computer, besides it works just like a video DVD.

It's everything you could've asked for, and more, so keep an eye on your mailbox.
